India, the third largest country in Asia, is home to some of the greatest scenic wonders of nature and yet, nearly all travellers stick to the same-old places and the main reason behind it is the lack of awareness about the unseen treasures. There are so many unseen places in India to visit that it would take several lifetimes to see them all. If you are looking for a real experience, it is time to go for the less-travelled road and discover unseen treasures in the nature. Here are some of the lesser-known destinations which are the wonderful alternatives to the greatly visited getaways in India:

1. Manas National Park 

Manas national park, a Project Tiger Reserve, a Biosphere Reserve, and an Elephant Reserve in Assam is a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. Manas is one of the finest-kept national parks in India. It is the only tiger reserve in Assam and is also known for the red panda and the rare golden langur. Manas is not only known for its rich biodiversity but also for its stunning scenery and natural landscape with includes a range of alluvial grasslands, tropical evergreen forests, and forested hills. Manas is located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. The site provides critical and viable habitats for rare and endangered species, including tiger, greater one-horned rhino, swamp deer, pygmy hog, and Bengal florican. Its home to India’s second largest tiger population. It is also known for its population of the Wild water buffalo. Forest officials arrange rides on elephants from Mathanguri for visitors to Manas where they can easily spot rhinos and tigers. The finest tine to see activity October till first week of December.

How to reach Manas National Park by flight 

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, located in Guwahati, is the nearest airport. This airport is located at a distance of around 145 km from the national park. Guwahati is well connected with other parts of the country via air. You can take a taxi from the airport to take you to the park. 


How to reach Manas National Park by road 

Manas is accessible from Guwahati (176 km.), Kaziranga (403 km.), Darjeeling (466 km.), Shillong (287 km.) and Siliguri (386 km.) by road. 


How to reach Manas National Park by train 

The closest major railway station is Guwahati, however, you can take another train from Guwahati to Barpeta Road Railway Station, which approximately 44 km away. From Barpeta Road Railway Station, taxis are easily available to take you to the park.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MANAS NATIONAL PARK

October to April are the best months for a visit to the Manas National Park as the weather is pleasant giving a chance to spot many wildlife species. The national park experiences semi-tropical climate, with humid summers, cold winters and heavy rainfall during monsoon. Avoid the monsoons, i.e. June to September when heavy rains can flood the park.

2. Mokokchung

The home of Ao Naga, Mokokchung is the most significant urban centre in all Nagaland after Dimapur and Kohima. It’s headquarter is Mokokchung Town which is the main urban centre in Northern part of Nagaland. Mokokchung is called as the Land of pioneers and also considered as the cultural and intellectual capital of Nagaland. Picturesque hills and the musical sounds of the streams running mesmerize you. This traditional land gets vibrant with activity during the festival seasons. Though most of the Aos, the tribes, have converted to Christianity, they retain the essence of their tribal features.

How to reach Mokokchung by flight 

The nearest airport to the town of Mokukchung is Jorhat, located at a distance of approximately 110 km. A few flights operate from Kolkata and Guhwati to Jorhat, it being a small airport. Board any of this flight to reach Mokukchung further by booking a taxi or a cab. 

How to reach Mokokchung by road 

Travelling to Mokokchung by road can be a fun option. The town is connected to the National Highway 61, initially connecting Kohima (Nagaland) to Jhanji (Assam). The roads are well built and surrounded by greenery and scenic views all throughout the stretch. Book a taxi or drive your way through this beautiful city for a mesmerising experience. Many buses regularly operate from Guhwati, Jorhat and a few other neighbouring areas to Mokokchung. Board these if you want a cheaper travel option. 

How to reach Mokokchung by train 

The nearest railway station to Mokokchung is Mariani in Assam, located at a travel distance of about 85 km from the town. Trains from majorly all nearby cities and town commute to Mariani, after boarding which, you can take up the bus service or book a taxi to make it to Mokokchung.

Not a huge place, so commuting within the town is easy. One can walk or take cars on rent to roam around the area.

Places to visit:

(Longkhum)

  • Longkhum - It is said that a single visit to Longkhum isn't enough. Your soul stays behind the first time and you have to return again to get it back. Such is the beauty of this place which houses the magnificent Rhododendrons atop the hillocks.
  • Ungma Village - This is the second largest village in Nagaland and the oldest and largest of the Ao tribe reside here. Believed to be the birthplace of the Ao tribe, the natives of this village have taken extra precautions to preserve the Ao culture and tradition.
  • Langpangkong Caves - These caves are situated between the valleys of Dikhu and Tzula Rivers. Towns Tuli and Changtongya are near these caves. Located in the midst of natural beauty in the Langpangkong mountain range, these caves are believed to have given shelter to an Ahom King.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MOKOKCHUNG

Located at the extreme eastern side of the subcontinent, Mokokchung has a temperature pattern characterised by the area. The monsoon experiences heavy rainfall, while other time of the year, the temperature range is moderate and pleasant

3. Kangojodi


Kangojodi is an offbeat destination nestled in the Himachal mountains lined with pine trees, surrounded by majestic hills and ravines. The place hasn’t been popularised yet and sees considerably lower volumes of tourists compared to its overcrowded counterparts. The place is great for a natural retreat away from the hustle bustle of the concrete jungles we have grown accustomed to, it also houses a great camping site with a myriad of offerings like adventure sports, trekking or just some quiet time to yourself. The campsite is the major attraction in the otherwise sleepy town of Kangojodi and also the driving force behind the tourist influx in the area.

HOW TO REACH

Camp Roxx is approximately 280 kilometres from Delhi and the nearest railway stations are Barog and Solan. Public buses are not common around the area, so you might have to drive up in your vehicle or rent a car. The camp site can be accessed via a dirt track 3 kilometres after the left turn from the Kangojodi 47 milestone on the Shimla-Nahan highway.

(Suketi Fossil Park)

  • Renuka Lake - Located just 38 kilometres away from Nahan, the Renuka Lake is the perfect place to visit for people who are into nature and the solace it offers. Unlike other lakes in the area that is famous for their pristine beauty and surroundings, the Renuka Lake is renowned for its cultural history. Not only is this the largest natural lake in Himachal Pradesh regarding area (the lake covers a circumference of about 3214 meters); this fantastic water body is shaped in the form of a reclining woman, and hence is considered to be a personification of the Goddess Renuka. Other than its cultural and religious significance, the lake also offers breathtaking views to visitors who reach the ridge of the lake after passing through dense alpine forests.

  • Trekking in Nahan - Travellers have many options for trekking in Nahan with some really exciting paths. The trek from Nahan to Renukaji, though easy is quite amazing. Churdhar peak also provide for various treks that offers spectacular view from the top.

  • Suketi Fossil Park -This theme park is for the life science and fossil fanatics. Almost 21 km away from Nahan, Suketi Fossil Park is a first one of a kind park in Asia and is established on the actual site of fossil discovery.

    BEST TIME TO VISIT KANGOJODI 

    The campsite is open throughout the year, but the best time to visit would be during the monsoons when the hills are greener and the water stream is running full. 

4. Megamalai


Often known as the “High Wavy Mountains”, Meghamalai is a petit yet beautiful place located in the Western Ghats in the state of Tamil Nadu. At an elevation of 1500 meters, this place is a perfect getaway to beat the heat and enjoy some peaceful time relaxing amidst nature. Nestled between the evergreen forest this place is filled with the fresh aroma of cardamom, cinnamon and pepper. The lush green tea plantations will give you an opportunity to sip fresh piping tea and enjoy a lazy stroll amidst nature replete with flora and fauna.

The nearest airport to reach Meghamalai is Madurai Airport which is at a distance of 118 km. the airport is well connected with major cities of India. From the airport rental cars are easily available that will take you to your desired destination.

The nearest railway station to reach Meghamalai is Madurai Railway Station. It is 119 km away from Meghamalai and well connected with the major cities. From there rental cars are easily available that will drop you at Meghamalai. 

How to reach Meghamalai by road 

Meghamalai is well connected with major cities and towns in Tamil Nadu. The nearest being Theni which is at a distance of 49 Km. Buses at regular intervals are run from all the major cities in Tamil Nadu by the Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation (TNSRTC) and also some of the private travel services.

(Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary)

  • Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary - Spread over a prolific area of 600 square km, Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is the place where you will discover the hidden wildlife in the dense forests of Meghamalai. The place is surrounded by bushy trees and the picturesque beauty will leave you enchanted. A serene lake flows in the sanctuary where a lot of birds and animals can be spotted either quenching their thirst or taking a dip.
  • Meghamalai Falls - Also known as Clouds Land Falls”, Meghamalai falls originates from the Meghamalai ranges. The gushing water cascades from a height of 190 ft making a sweet sound that echoes throughout the place. The place is perfect to sit around and spend some quiet moments listening to the music of nature and witnessing its beauty.
  • Dams - Meghamalai is home to six dams that are popular and must visit amongst travelers. The Dams provide spectacular view of the whole place. These include Iravangalar Dam, Thoovanam Dam, Vanniar Dam, Manalar Dam and Thekkady Dam. Each dam has its own beauty and is worth a visit.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MEGHAMALAI 

The best time to visit Meghamalai is between the months of October and May. The weather is pleasant complimented by the crisp and fresh breeze that flows. The cool weather aids in the making of mist that makes this place look mystical.

5. Tirthan Valley 

Tirthan Valley in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh is perched at an altitude of 1600 metres above sea level. Deriving its name from Tirthan River flowing through it, Tirthan Valley lies around 3 km from the entrance of Great Himalayan National Park. This place is abundant in adventurous activities and a paradise for nature lovers.

The magnificent Himalayas with snow-covered tops looking over the Tirthan River, this valley is best known for its trout fishing, trekking, and adventure activities and beautiful guesthouses set in nature.

How to reach Tirthan Valley by flight 

The nearest airport to Tirthan Valley is Bhuntar, located at a distance of around 48 km from the location. Indian Airlines and Deccan Airways operate flights often to this region. Helicopter service by Jagson Airlines can also be undertaken to reach the place, after which you can board a taxi. 

How to reach Tirthan Valley by road 

The HPTDC has regular bus services from neighbouring states like Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. To travel to Tirthan Valley, you can take a bus till Aut which is just 26 km from your destination. Cabs are easily available from there on till the town. Other options are Jalori Pass (27 km) and Shoja (22 km). 

How to reach Tirthan Valley by train 

The nearest railway stations to the location are Ambala and Kiratpur, both well connected with various other cities through the means of a rail network. You can board a bus or take a taxi from these railway stations to reach the valley. 

Local transport in Tirthan Valley 

Tirthan Valley is a small quite place where a cab is easily available to commute from one place to another. However, do plan your visit as per your priority. Activities like trekking and camping can be enjoyed in any season while snow appears from December till March end. Carry heavy woolens during winters.

(Serlosar Lake)

  • River Crossing - River crossing in the Tirthan Valley is an adventure sport for people who are looking for some adrenaline rush in the quiet valley. A person is tied to a safety harness and slides from one point to the other, with the turbulent River Tirthan gushing underneath. The icy cold spray of the river while taking on the sport, sure is a motivating factor for enthusiasts.
  • Serlosar Lake - Serlosar Lake, another major attraction of the village is located about 5 km from Jalori Pass. The lake has clear water which remains so despite of several leaves falling into it.
  • Jalori Pass - Almost 80 km. from Kullu, Jalori Pass is a stunning place for trekking and picnic at an altitude of 3120 m above the sea level. Pack your bag, lunch and gear up your shoes to enjoy the stunning view of the great Himalayas with Dhauladhar stretched in a line peaking from far behind.

BEST TIME TO VISIT TIRTHAN VALLEY

The best time to visit the mesmerising valley of Tirthan is between March and June which is the spring/summer season. The weather stays pleasantly cool and is apt for exploring flora and fauna, especially the lush green meadows and the apple orchards. The winter season, between November, December, January and February, also could be an excellent time to visit the valley, especially for those who are looking for a location that receives snowfall and can handle icy conditions. The monsoon season begins in June/July and lasts till August. The region gets moderate to heavy rainfall and turns into a beautiful location but is not quite convenient for the explorers as the visibility decreases substantially.

6. Gokarna


With its pristine beaches and breathtaking landscapes, Gokarna is a Hindu pilgrimage town in Karnataka and a newly found hub for beach lovers and hippies. Situated on the coast of Karwar, every year Gokarna welcomes hordes of tourists from around the world in search of sanctity and relaxation. The out-of-town beaches like Kudle beach and Om Beach are a different contrast to life inside the town. 

Palm clad beaches are dotted with foreign tourists in a majority and very few Indians are seen across. Gokarna is not very conventionally touristy. The beaches are meant for a slow, relaxed holiday and everything on the beach goes at the same relaxed pace. Full of coconut and palm trees, the ocean and clean sands, Gokarna is a 'one of a kind' place in the country.

Nearest airport to Gokarna is Dabolim airport in Goa that is a 3.5-hour drive away. Dabolim airport is well-connected with all the major cities of India and as well as from a few foreign countries. From Dabolim, you can take a taxi, bus or a train to Gokarna. Although, travelling by road is suggested. 

How to reach Gokarna by road 

Gokarna is well-connected by road with the nearby cities. You can find direct buses from the nearest cities Goa, Bangalore, Mangalore and direct buses are also available from Delhi to Gokarna. You can also hire a taxi from nearby cities for a more comfortable and convenient journey. 

How to reach Gokarna by train 

The nearest railway station to Gokarna is Gokarna road, at a distance of 10 km from the main Gokarna city. However, being a small station it is not connected with the major cities. Another station, Ankola, railway station at a distance of 20 km from Gokarna, is considered as the nearest well-connected railway station to Gokarna. 

Local transport in Gokarna 

Although rickshaws and taxis are available within Gokarna, walking is the best way to explore this small town.

Places to visit:

(Kudle Beach)

  • Om Beach - Famous for being naturally shaped like the auspicious symbol Om, Om beach attracts tourists round the year.
  • Mahabaleshwara Temple - A Shiva Linga known as the Atmalinga is worshipped in this Mahabaleshwar temple.
  • Paradise Beach, Gokarna - The Paradise beach is accessible only by boat or after some trekking. No water sports are available here but swimming in the calm waters can be fun.
  • Kudle Beach - This is one of the most famous tourist spot, located around 20-minutes (walking distance) away from Gokarna. Here travelers will get a number of simple huts and beach-side eating places where one can enjoy lots of things. A kilometers-long pure white sandy beach surrounded by palm trees is the major attraction of this beach that attracts large number of travelers.

BEST TIME TO VISIT GOKARNA

 

The best time to visit Gokarna would definitely be from October to March when the humidity is at its very least.  November to February is especially crowded with a lot of foreigners. The offseason, that is the rainy season, is not the ideal time to go to the beaches with all of them looking desolate and unkempt with limited food options. The temples in the town are most lively around festivals of Shivratri and Ganesh Chaturthi.

 

7. Kamshet

Kamshet is a picturesque hill station in Western Ghats, renowned for paragliding and flying schools. Surrounded by Western Ghats, this place is regularly featured in the top 10 must visit destinations of India for an adventurous junkie.

Located in Pune district, just 45 km from the main town, Kamshet is a paragliders paradise. It's a beautiful place with small villages with natural scenery and fresh air. You can enjoy the surroundings and also have a closer look at the village life of India with muddy huts and village markets. The area is surrounded by paddy and sunflower fields and it provides an awesome view while you are enjoying the world class paragliding facilities here. Among other important attractions in this region are the Bhairi caves, Bhedsa caves, Khondeshwar temple, Pavana lake and Shinde wadi hills. Due to its proximity to other hill stations like Lonavla and Khandala, one can include those places in this trip as well.

How to reach Kamshet by flight 

Pune Airport serves as the closest airbase to Kamshet tucked 55 km away. It is well connected via trains, buses, and taxis to the serene destination. Local carriers like Air India, Vistara, SpiceJet, Indigo and Go Air have their frequent services of flights between major cities of India to Pune. Apart from Pune Airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Mumbai is the major international airport from where buses, taxis as well as suburban trains are easily available to Kamshet.

How to reach Kamshet by road 

Kamshet is well connected to other major cities of the country via regular private and state-run buses and cabs. Alternatively, one can also self-drive to Kamshet from nearby cities of Pune and Mumbai. The road network is excellent and affluent with the quaint lush green landscape around.

How to reach Kamshet by train 

With a dense frequency of trains from all over India, Lonavala serves to be the heart of Kamshet catering the railway network needs of the destination. It connects all the major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Cochin, Goa, Chennai, etc. One can hire a taxi or a bus from the station to head to Kamshet, located 17 km away.

Private vehicles or public transport to this place from the nearest rail stations are the most accomodating transportation.

Places to visit:

(Pawna Lake)

  • Paragliding - Kamshet is one of the top spots in India to experience the feel of paragliding in its entirety. With much experienced gliding schools and trainers, Kamshet is that hub for parasailing where you can safely indulge in the sport and make it one of the most redefining experiences of your life.

  • Shinde Wadi hills - Shinde wadi hills is a paragliding take off point. This spot is ideal for the paragliding beginners as the take off height is just about 100 to 200 feet above the ground level.

  • Pawna Lake - Formed by the Pavana dam, is an artificial lake with the Lohgad, Tikona and Tungi forts, situated close by.

    BEST TIME TO VISIT KAMSHET

    Kamshet has a Tropical climate. The destination experiences constant weather that nearby cities in and around the district of Maharastra do. As paragliding is the main sport here, it is advisable to avoid monsoon visits as the winds are strong. Cool winters and warm summers are the best time to visit Kamshet. Waterfalls can be spotted here during monsoons.

8. Bundi


A princely state for a princely stay, in the northwest of India, lies the district of Bundi, in the Hadoti region of the royal state of Rajasthan. In ancient times, the area around Bundi was apparently inhabited by various local tribes.

Bundi was previously called 'Bunda-Ka-Nal"; Nal meaning 'narrow ways'. It is said to derive its name from a former Meena tribe man called Bunda Meena. Later the region was governed by Rao Deva Hada who took over Bundi from Jaita Meena in 1342 and established a princely state Bundi renaming the surrounding area called Hadoti the land of great Hada Rajputs. Bundi is home to some of the most magnificent palaces, majestic forts, its baolis (meaning water wells or step wells), haves, temples and chhatris with carved pillars.

It is of great historical significance as it has been a witness to many battles and legendary tales of valor. Bundi is blessed with a plethora of nature along with a beautiful pattern of rivers and lakes and some enchanted waterfalls. The lushy lands of this area are host to a huge variety of flora and fauna. The picturesque sceneries of Bundi have inspired a lot of writers and artists. Situated at a distance of 210 km from Jaipur and 35 km from Kota surrounded by the Aravalli Range on three sides, this city lies near a narrow gorge. A substantial wall with four gateways encircles the city.

How to reach Bundi by flight 

If you want to reach Bundi by air, the nearest airport is the Jaipur airport, which is at a distance of around 150 km. You can make use of the taxi service up till Bundi. 

How to reach Bundi by road 

If you are travelling within the state of Rajasthan, then reaching Bundi becomes easy as it well connected by both state-run and private buses to several cities in Rajasthan like Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, etc., as well as cities of other Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi etc. The distance between Jaipur and Bundi is 206 km. Bundi is well connected by NH 12 from Jaipur to Tonk, Bundi, Kota and Jabalpur. 

How to reach Bundi by train 

If you are planning a journey on the tracks, the nearest railway station is at Kota, which is 35 km away from Bundi. From the station, a taxi drive would cost you about Rs 500 from Kota to Bundi. Kota is well connected by rail to a lot of major cities. 

Local transport in Bundi 

Language here should not be a problem as the locals here understand both English and Hindi. Facilities like cars on rent, Auto Rickshaw and Buses are available for commuting. One can easily find tour guides to help you about the city. There is an availability of phone booths, Fax machines, internet and postal services for usage.

(Moti Mahal)

  • Taragarh Fort - The most significant of the tourist’s attractions here is this fort built somewhere in the 16th century. It is included amongst the most famous ones in Rajasthan for its intricate structures and a highly regarded painting gallery (from here originated the Bundi style of mural painting).

  • Moti Mahal - Bundi is a small town in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan, which lies 250 km away from the capital city of Rajasthan and 39 km from Kota. The town is famous for its picturesque forts, steep wells (baolis), palaces, lakes, and reservoirs. Moti Mahal is one of the unmatched attractions of the town. Along with the historic beauty of the Moti Mahal Palace, you can also enjoy the panoramic view of the arid Aravali hills in the backdrop along with the view of the ancient Nagal Sagar Lake.

  • Badal Mahal – The Badal Mahal is located in the premises of the Taragarh Fort. The walls of this majestic palace are covered with exquisite paintings. These paintings are interesting since they depict an influence of Chinese culture.

    BEST TIME TO VISIT BUNDI

    Bundi's weather is pretty much same as the weather in the rest of Rajasthan. The summers in this region are extremely hot and dry, with the maximum temperature during daytime reaching up to 35 - 43 degrees Celsius, the days here are extremely dry with hot winds blowing. As it gets closer to night time, the temperature slowly begins to drop, making it a little cooler. During the winter season, the weather here gets extremely chilly, with the temperature dropping down to 5 degrees Celsius. The winters in this place are an absolute delight. The rainfalls in Bundi are restricted to the months of July till mid-September. The monsoons here make days extremely humid, with the level of humidity reaching up to 90%. So keeping all of the above in mind, the best time to visit Bundi is from October to March, when climatic conditions remain cool and pleasant.

 9. North Sikkim

One of the most uninhabited areas of the country, yet extremely beautiful and charming, North Sikkim shares its boundary with China and Nepal.

Mangan is the headquarters of the North Sikkim district. It is one of the most mystically beautiful though unexplored areas due to the harsh conditions found here. Located at an altitude of 956 meters the town of Mangan serves as a base for trekking and hiking trips in the mountains and forests. North Sikkim is famous for the Gurudongmar Lake which is one of the highest lakes of India. It also has religious importance. Apart from lakes, there are some important monasteries in this area too.

How to reach North Sikkim by flight 

North-Sikkim does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is located at Bagdogra which is nearly 125 km away. You can find taxis and buses outside the airport to travel to North-Sikkim.

How to reach North Sikkim by road 

Hired taxis and cabs can take you to North-Sikkim as far as the roads that are accessible for travelling allow. Otherwise, trekking would be the best option for you.

How to reach North Sikkim by train 

North-Sikkim does not have its own railway station.

Local transport in North Sikkim 

Taxis should be able to take you to most of the motorable roads. Otherwise, trekking is also an option to access this area nicely.

(Cholamu Lake)
  • Gurudongmar Lake - The Gurudongmar Lake is situated at a height of 5,210 m and is considered sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus alike. Every year during the peak season, devotees and tourists flock to this place.

  • Lachung - Situated at an altitude of 3000 m, Lachung is a quaint little town in the Northern side of Sikkim. Lachen is situated where two tributaries of Teesta River-Lachen and Lachung converge.

  • Yumthang Valley - Yumthang Valley (3564 m) is popular among tourists for its beautiful landscape and the spell bounding views of the mountains beyond. The river Teesta flows through the valley, making this a grazing ground for the animals during the summers.

  • Lachen - Situated at an altitude of 8838 feet in the northern part of Sikkim, Lachen is one of the most beautiful places in the whole of Sikkim. It is famous for its stunning landscape and its splendid viewpoints of the mountains and lush green surroundings.

  • Cholamu Lake - World's 14th highest and India's highest lake, the Cholamu Lake in North Sikkim is situated at an altitude of 18000 feet from the sea level.

The best time to visit North Sikkim are the months of May to September. The temperature is moderate with a maximum of 28-30 degree Celcius. The weather in North Sikkim is most definitely cold or at least cool at all times. It experiences mild to heavy rainfall during the months of July and September. The weather during the winters is very harsh with the temperatures falling to sub-zero and it is not advisable to visit this town during this time. However, while planning your trip to this spectacular region, your itinerary will help you decide exactly which season is best for your visit, though many are of the belief that the summer months of April and May provide the best outcomes for trips to this region.
